40 MOVIES ONLY BLACK PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT (PART 2)

I’ve made it no secret that I’m a movie geek.  I love doing the whole deal; watching, quoting, memorizing.

Thing is there are some movies out there that I honestly can’t really discuss with my white friends…

It’s not their fault; there are just some movies out there that were specifically green-lighted by studio execs with the African-American audience in mind.

There's a few that have gotten big enough to appeal to White America: Do The Right Thing, Higher Learning, Friday, Juice, How High, He Got Game, Dead Presidents, etc.

But for every one of those, there are hundreds of others that will draw confused stares if mentioned or discussed around people of the Caucasian persuasion.

So here are 40 of my favorites.  If you’re Black, you’ll probably nod your head and laugh.  If you're White, consider it a tutorial.  One or two may even pique your interest enough to check out on your own time.

And if you’re white and have seen five or more, you probably have some black friends who made you sit down and watch with them.

We did 40-21 earlier, here comes the top 20!

20. CLASS ACT
Kid is Play.  Play is Kid.  Got it?

19. SUGAR HILL
Wesley Snipes is just a mild-mannered Harlem drug lord trying to get out of the game.  Too bad the mafia, and the guy who played Winston in Ghostbusters won't let him.

18. LAST DRAGON
Barry Gordy's Kung-Fu masterpiece.  Be sure to look out for William H. Macy and Chazz Palminteri in some of their first roles.

17. BEBE'S KIDS
Comedian Robin Harris' stand-up bit gets the animated full-feature treatment.

16. DEF JAM'S HOW TO BE A PLAYER
Bust out your pens and notepads.  Bill Bellamy will pass you the knowledge if you want it.

15.BOOMERANG
Speaking of players...Eddie Murphy is one and doesn't take too well to being played by Robin Givens. Halle Berry looks pretty sexy in it it too.

14.MENACE II SOCIETY
What would you do if a crackhead offered you a bj as payment for some rock?  Larenz Tate has the answer...

13. 3 STRIKES
Brian Hooks is down to his last strike or he's just another statistic.  Time to make like Carl Lewis.

12. HARLEM NIGHTS
Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor, and Red Foxx are nightclub owners dodging the mob, crooked cops, and Jasmine Guy's sultry ass.

11. BLANKMAN
Damon Wayans becomes a superhero and cleans up Chicago's mean streets.  "Minelli, you're going down!"

10. THE COLOR PURPLE
The more things change, the more they stay the same.

9. LEAN ON ME
Morgan Freeman wasn't always the nice, cuddly, sweet-voiced, old black man everyone loves today...

8. THE WOOD
It's has aspects from all four major American Pie movies rolled into one.  Only it doesn't need to resort to humping an apple pie for laughs.

7. THE PLAYER'S CLUB
Ice Cube's directional debut features LisaRay as a stripper, Jamie Foxx as the club DJ and Bernie Mac as the coolest  (and most ruthless) strip club manager to ever walk in Dollar Bill!

6. METEOR MAN
Robert Townsend gets hit by a Meteor, develops powers, and takes on the Golden Lords; the most fashionable gang in our Nation's Capital.  I wonder if they have a Costco card for all that peroxide?

5. BOYZ IN DA HOOD
Cuba Gooding Jr had so much street cred after this film.  Then he just HAD to make Snow Dogs and mess everything up.

4. HOUSE PARTY
Kid 'N Play, Martin Lawrence and Tisha Campbell throw an epic party on a school night.  That takes skill.

3. NEW JACK CITY
ICE T always plays a Gangster or a Cop.  This time he's a cop trying to bring down Wesley Snipes' criminal empire.

2. I'M GONNA GIT YOU SUCKA
The first Wayans family "spoof" movie. 25 years ago, Keenan Ivory, Bernie Casey, Isaac Hayes and Jim Brown teamed up to show the world that being a "black hero" isn't easy work.

1. BELLY
If you're white and you've seen this, my hats off to you.  That's pretty impressive man. Music Video Maestro Hype Williams' hood tale stars DMX, Nas, Method Man, T-Boz (TLC) and Taral Hicks.
